The film hardness of a single- or multi-layer coating system is determined using the Buchholz indentation test. In this test, an indenter is placed gently onto the horizontally aligned surface of the organic coating under test and lifted off after a loading time of 30 seconds. The length of the lens-shaped indentation in the paint film is measured, and the Buchholz indentation resistance is calculated from this.
