The dye drop test is used to determine the quality of the densification of anodised coatings. The anodised layer is first subjected to an acid treatment and then stained with a dye. The degree of (irreversible) dye uptake is assessed using a characteristic value and is used to classify the compaction quality of the anodised pores.
