The etching test is used to determine the quality of an anodised layer, which is significantly influenced by the compaction of the anodised pores. The test specimen is immersed in an acid solution for a defined period of time, and the resulting loss in mass is determined. The extent of the mass loss in the acid is a measure of the quality of the coating.
