The thermal shock test is used in particular to assess the adhesion strength of electroplated coatings. To do this, the test specimen is heated and then quenched in cold water. The differing coefficients of thermal expansion, combined with the temperature gradient, result in a brief mechanical stress between the coating and the base material. No cracks or flaking must occur during this process.
