Certification of coating plants

DIN 55633 / DIN 55634 in the coatings industry

The certification procedures in accordance with DIN 55633 and DIN 55634 offer coating companies the opportunity to optimise and monitor their processes and procedures in line with the specified quality standards. By complying with these standards, companies can demonstrate their expertise and reliability within the coating industry. Here at the IFO Institute for Surface Technology, we offer these certification procedures for your company – please do get in touch.

What are the specific contents and areas of application of the DIN 55633 and DIN 55634 standards?

Both standards, DIN 55633 and 55634, apply to the corrosion protection of load-bearing components made of unalloyed or low-alloy steel. In line with international standards, such as DIN EN ISO 12944 – liquid coatings – this standard also defines corrosion categories and service life periods based on real-world atmospheric conditions. Furthermore, it specifies the associated assessment and certification procedures.

Both standards apply to individual-piece coatings applied in the factory. However, they do not apply to reinforcing steel or components for reinforced concrete. Other protective functions, such as protection against micro-organisms, chemicals, mechanical stress or fire, are also not covered.

DIN 55633 – Powder coating on galvanised steel or KTL

DIN 55633 is a German standard that deals with quality assurance in the field of corrosion protection. It sets out requirements for corrosion protection systems and their testing, and contains basic rules for surface preparation and final acceptance. DIN 55633 specifies particular requirements for powder-coated components made from hot-dip galvanised, uncoated or cathodic dip coating (KTL)-primed material that are exposed to atmospheric corrosion.

Corrosivity categories

Corrosivity categoryExamples of typical environments
C1: insignificantheated buildings with a neutral atmosphere
C2 lowEnvironments with low levels of contamination; unheated buildings where condensation may occur
C3 moderateUrban and industrial environments with moderate sulphur dioxide levels; production areas with high humidity and air pollution
C4 strongIndustrial environments with moderate salt exposure, chemical plants or similar conditions
C5 very strongIndustrial areas with high humidity and corrosive atmospheres, areas subject to constant condensation or heavy contamination
CX ExtremeOffshore environments and industrial areas characterised by extreme humidity and corrosive atmospheres

DIN 55634 – Coating of thin-walled components

DIN 55634 is also a standard that deals with quality assurance in the field of corrosion protection. It specifies requirements for the corrosion protection of steel structures and components and sets out the requirements for the implementation of corrosion protection measures. DIN 55634 applies to the corrosion protection of load-bearing components made of unalloyed or low-alloy steel. It covers powder-coated materials with a nominal sheet thickness of less than 3 mm, either on hot-dip galvanised material in accordance with DIN EN ISO 1461 or without metallic coatings, which are exposed to atmospheric corrosion. In addition, Part 2 of this standard sets out a certification procedure which requires regular monitoring of the coating process.

Benefits of certification to DIN 55633 and DIN 55634

These new certification programmes offer benefits to companies and professionals in the field of corrosion protection. They help to improve the quality and reliability of corrosion protection projects and ensure customer satisfaction. Through certification, companies can demonstrate their expertise and know-how in the field of corrosion protection. Certification can also help to strengthen a company’s reputation and improve its competitiveness.

As a customer of a powder coating company certified to DIN 55633 and DIN 55634, you benefit from a range of advantages:

Guaranteed quality

The certification ensures that the company has effective quality management processes in place and delivers consistent, high-quality coatings.

Reliable results

By complying with the standard, you can be confident of consistent quality and high performance in the coatings.

Legal compliance

The certification ensures that the coating company complies with the applicable regulations and standards, which offers customers additional peace of mind.

Your path to certification

The certification process in accordance with DIN 55633 and DIN 55634 usually involves the following steps:

Certification:
Following a successful inspection and assessment of the test panels, the certification body accredited to ISO/IEC 17065 makes the certification decision. The company is then awarded the official certificate in accordance with DIN 55633 / DIN 55634.

Submission of applications:
Before certification in accordance with DIN 55633 / DIN 55634 can take place, the IFO Institute’s certification body must assess the feasibility within the scope of both standards, as well as the technical viability. If there are no obstacles, the relevant preparations will commence.

Preparation:
The company is preparing for certification by bringing its in-house production control system into line with the standards, reviewing processes and ensuring that all requirements are met.

In-house production control:
The coating contractor shall draw up all relevant documents and records to demonstrate compliance with the requirements.

Inspection and testing in the laboratory:
The IFO Institute’s independent certification body, accredited to ISO/IEC 17065, carries out inspections and audits of test plates to verify that the organisation’s operations comply with the relevant requirements.

Differences between DIN 55633 and DIN 55634

The two standards, DIN 55633 and DIN 55634, differ in several respects. Here is a brief overview of the differences between the two standards:

DIN 55633

  • Applies to powder coatings on steel, galvanised steel and KTL with a nominal sheet thickness of over 3 mm.
  • Applies exclusively to powder coatings.
  • The scope of application covers components that are exposed to atmospheric corrosion.

DIN 55634

  • Applies to coatings on thin-walled components with a thickness of less than 3 mm (nominal sheet thickness).
  • Covers both liquid and powder coatings.
  • The scope of application covers components that are exposed to atmospheric corrosion.

Difference between DIN 55634 and DIN EN ISO 12944

The DIN 55634 and DIN EN ISO 12944 series of standards set out requirements for corrosion protection provided by coating systems on unalloyed and low-alloy steel. However, the standards differ in key respects:

DIN 55634 – Liquid coating and powder coating

  • Applies to load-bearing steel components with a thickness of less than 3 mm.
  • Provides corrosion protection for thin-walled components.
  • The assessment procedure focuses on delamination.

DIN EN ISO 12944 – Liquid coating

  • Applies to components with a thickness of more than 3 mm.
  • Provides general corrosion protection for components.
  • The assessment procedure focuses on red rust.

Duration of certification in accordance with DIN 55633 / DIN 55634 and other requirements

Certification in accordance with DIN standards 55633 or 55634 can take around one year from the time of application to the issue of the certificate. In special cases, this timeframe may be shortened, but this requires thorough preparation. Please note the processing times. The varying durations of the laboratory tests depend on the specific corrosivity category required. The corrosivity categories achieved are confirmed on the certificate. Certification to both standards can also be carried out separately. The standards can be tested and certified individually. The DIN 55634 standard can also be applied to coil coating.
